In the corner of my eye
I see her tiptoe on eggshells so softly
So eager to be loved first instead of an afterthought
She checks her face in the mirror and brushes her hair back and thinks,
In this audition, maybe she will be chosen
If she stands straight enough, if the cadence of her words is sweet enough and says her lines just right
Just like the character she is meant to play in the drama of your mind
Something glimmering catches at the corner of your eye
She falters on her execution as she watches your candlelight gaze flicker
Her confidence crumbles at a split second moment of distraction
So she walks out of your theater to her next audition
